Places to Visit
Bethlehem: A lot of religious places are situated in Israel, one of them is Bethlehem, where Jesus Christ had been born. Over his birthplace, the Holy Crypt, the Church of the Nativity was built in the year 330.
The Dead Sea: Near the Dead Sea Masada is a hot spot for tourists. You can reach the plateau by cable car or by foot and have a wonderful view over the Dead Sea. There are remains of the palace of King Herod the Great, and houses of Jewish rebels, the Sicarii, which committed mass suicide while the Roman army was going to defeat them. Another place of interest is Mount Sodom, a mountain of salt with caves full of hanging salt formations.
Eilat: In southern Israel Eilat at the Red Sea is a famous place for water sports, and the combination with its nice environment makes it very attractive for tourists. Nearby the Timna Valley National Park is worth visiting.
Jericho: The town of Jericho dates back more than 10.000 years. Interesting sites in the area are the ancient settlement Tel el Sultan, Caliph Hisham’s palace with old mosaics and the Mount Temptation, where Jesus fasted and meditated 40 days and nights.
Jerusalem: In the Old City of Jerusalem you find the religious sites: the Wailing Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Dome of the Rock (Al Haram al Sharif) and the Al Aksa Mosque. Visitors can also see the Jaffa and Damascus gates. There are a lot of important museums like Yad Vashem, the memorial for the murdered Jews during the Holocaust or the Shrine of the Book, where the Qumran scrolls are housed.
The Sea of Galilee: At the Sea of Galilee the city Tiberias is located, which was built by Herod Antipas 17 AD and is now the biggest town in the Jordan Valley. The mild weather, hot springs and religious places nearby like Kafarnaum make the pretty town to a tourist spot.
Tel Aviv: The modern Tel Aviv offers a cosmopolitan atmosphere, culture, nightlife and sandy beaches at the Mediterranean Sea. Popular is the Museum of the Diaspora, the Carmel Market, the old seaport in Jaffa and examples of Bauhaus architecture, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
