Places to Visit

Abu Simbel: 280 km south from Aswan Abu Simbel is located, where visitors can view two temples of Pharao Ramses II. The great temple, one of the most beautiful in Egypt, is characterized by four 20 m statues of the pharao, the small temple is dedicated to his wife Nefertari.

Alexandria:
Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC Alexandria - once a world famous Mediterranean port - is still the largest seaport in Egypt. Places of interest are the Roman Amphitheatre, Pompey's Pillar as a remain of a temple, the Roman catacombs Kom Al Shuqafa, the 15th century Citadel of Qaitbay as well as Maamoura Beach and Montaza Royal Gardens.

Aswan: Aswan is a very pretty place, where you can cruise by a felucca, a wooden sailing ship, along the Nile. Places of interest nearby is the Aswan High Dam, the Aga Khan Mausoleum, Elephantine Island and Kitchener's Island with its botanical garden, the Philae Temple and Kalabsha Temple.

Cairo and the Pyramids: In the biggest city of the African continent there is plenty to see. The Egyptian Museum presents the tomb artefacts of King Tut-ench-Amoun. Worth visiting are the Salah al-Din Citadel, the Hanging Church, Abu Serga Church and the Khan el Khalili suq. Not far away from Cairo you can view in Giza the Pyramids and the Great Sphinx, a lion body with a human head. In Sakkara are many smaller pyramids, amongst others the famous Step Pyramid of Djozer.

Luxor:
In Luxor visitors have to stay several days for seeing all the tombs and temples. On the east bank of the Nile River the temple complex of Karnak and the Temple of Luxor are located, on the west bank the Valley of Kings and the Valley of Queens, Colossi of Memnon and the Hatsepshut Temple. The town is the most popular starting or ending point for Nile cruises.

The Sinai Peninsula:
One attraction on the Sinai Peninsula is the Saint Catherine's Monastery, which was founded in the 6th century at the foot of Mount Sinai. It is one of the oldest continuously functioning Christian monasteries. Another interesting place is the 2285 meter high Mount Moses. Many visitors climb in the early morning on the top of this mountain to see the sunrise.

Sharm El Sheikh and Dahab: The most famous beach resorts at the Red Sea is Sharm El Sheikh. Attractive for many visitors are its warm climate, long beaches, fine coral reefs to enjoy scuba diving and snorkeling and its nightlife. Around 100 km distant from Sharm the smaller town Dahab is located, not stylish like Sharm, but a hot spot for diving and windsurfing.
